Types of Cosmetic Dental Treatments for Your Bright Smile
Composite bonding, veneers, crowns, implants, Invisalign, recontouring, and whitening are some of the cosmetic dental treatments our cosmetic dental clinic in Calgary offers. Certain treatments may be a better fit for you to achieve the smile you want.
If you have amalgam (silver) fillings you may opt to have those fillings redone with composite bonding. The composite material can be made to match the color of the surrounding teeth making it look more natural. You may want to replace old fillings if you have decided to whiten your teeth to match your newly whitened dentition as composite fillings, similar to crowns and veneers, do not whiten.
Veneers are thin shells either made of porcelain or composite resin that is then attached to the front portion of the tooth. Composite resin veneers are done by applying thin layers of the material onto the tooth. After the material is hardened the dentist is able to shape and form it to the desired shape. Porcelain veneers require the dentist to shave the tooth down; once that is done a custom veneer is then fitted on top. Porcelain veneers take at least two appointments compared to composite resin veneers which are done at one appointment. Depending on the complexity of the tooth, one form may be recommended over the other by our cosmetic dentist in Calgary.
Crowns are made of a variety of materials including zirconia, porcelain, metal (gold), or porcelain fused to a metal base. The porcelain on top allows them to be color matched with the surrounding teeth while the metal base protects the tooth it is fitted on. Crowns are recommended for teeth that are weakened to protect them from fractures or cracks, especially if the tooth has had a root canal. Like the veneers, typically two appointments are required.
Implants are used to replace missing teeth to maintain function or restore a smile. A small screw is inserted into the jaw where the missing teeth used to be. Then a crown is made to sit onto of the screw. The crown is made to look exactly like your natural dentition.
Recontouring is where the dentist alters the length, shape, and surface of the tooth or teeth. This procedure can be done on minor chips, smoothing out bulges, overhangs, or uneven edges, contouring irregular tooth shapes due to overcrowding, or adjusting the length of teeth. This is a quick and simple procedure that requires no freezing.
Whitening is the most common cosmetic dental procedure. It can be done at home or in-office. A gel is applied to the surface of your teeth that contains chemicals to help remove or whiten any stains. Please note that if you have veneers, crowns, or old composite fillings they will not whiten, unlike your natural teeth. This is because the gel contains chemicals like peroxide that act on the enamel to whiten it.
What Dental Issues Cosmetic Dentistry Solves?
Cosmetic dentistry services can help solve a variety of dental issues that may affect your smile. If you have minor chips or misshapen edges in your enamel, you may want to consider recontouring to even out the teeth. Composite bonding is another option to even out chips or misshapen edges if recontouring cannot be done.
If discoloration is your concern, whitening may be the best treatment for you whether that be in the office or at home. Gaps in your teeth can be due to extractions or the natural growth of your teeth. If the gap is due to a tooth being extracted there are a few options you can consider pursuing such as partial dentures, bridges, or implants (link buttons). If your concern is to close the gap between the teeth not due to extractions, Invisalign (link button) might be right for you.
